Chloë McCardel honoured at the International Swimming Hall of Fame
Non-stop Aussie Chloë McCardel will be immortalized in the International Marathon Swimming Hall of Fame at just 30 years of age. She is a world record holder for the longest solo unassisted marathon swim and has so far completed 13 English Channel solo crossings.
Australian ultra-marathon swimmer and world record holder Chloë McCardel will be honoured with an international award and induction for her marathon swimming achievements.
She will be inducted into the International Swimming Hall of Fame (IMSHOF) joining a list of Australian greats of the sport including Linda McGill (inducted 1968) and Des Renford (inducted 1978). She will be the youngest member in this Hall of Fame. The induction will take place in a special ceremony in Los Angeles on 4th November this year.
And, in a first for a swimmer, Chloë will be awarded the Poseidon Award from the International Swimming Hall of Fame (ISHOF).
The Poseidon Award is to recognize her outstanding year in 2015. On August 9 after 36hrs 12min of continuous swimming, she became the first Australian and fourth person in history to swim a triple continuous crossing of the English Channel. In addition, only 5 weeks earlier, she became the first person ever to swim 3x single channel crossings in under a week (29th June, 3rd July and 5th July 2015). In total she swam 6x solo crossings of the English Channel last year.
The International Swimming Hall of Fame who bestow The Poseidon Award do so to recognize a high level achievement from personal effort or initiative in a field of endeavor that contributes to the performance of marathon swimmers or to the development and status of Marathon Swimming to the world.
Chloë said, “I’m thoroughly humbled to be inducted into the Marathon Swimming Hall of Fame, it is the highest level of international recognition in the sport of marathon swimming. To have my name next to the greats of our sports is such a privilege. To receive The Poseidon Award is such a surprise and is truly incredible… I am really lost for words – I didn’t even know swimmers are eligible to receive this award! ”
Chloë also received 7x international awards for her 2015 English Channel achievements.
Chloë has now completed 13 English Channel solo crossings. Only a handful of people in history have swum more than a dozen English Channel crossings. This year she is attempting 7x solo crossings of the English Channel this English Summer to surpass the late and great Des Renford’s record of 19x crossings which he achieved over his sporting career. Des currently holds the record for the most number of English Channel crossings by an Australian.
